Not everyone is required to file a tax return.
A taxpayer is required to file a tax return if his gross income exceeds the combined total of the standard deduction and personal exemption amounts.
The requirement thresholds are as followed:
Single: $10,000 - Single (over 65) $11,500
Head of Household: $12,850 - HOH (over 65) $14,350
Married Filing Jointly: $20,000 - MFJ (on spouse over 65) $21,200 MFJ (both spouses over 65) $22,400
Married Filing Separately: $3,000 (any age)
Qualifying Widow(er) with dependent child: $16,100 -QW with dependent child (over 65) $17,300
